The surge of overdoses and opioid-related deaths in Canada is a national public health crisis. The Government of Canada funded the AFMC, in partnership with Canada’s 17 medical schools, to create a national, bilingual, comprehensive, and competency-based curriculum for medical graduates, residents and practicing physicians interested in pain management and substance use. The evidence-based training aims to fill gaps in educational programs across Canada, including the diagnosis, treatment, and management of pain. In January 2021, the AFMC successfully developed and launched an Undergraduate Medical Education (Foundational Practice) curriculum and building on this work, we have developed a Postgraduate Medical Education (Intermediate Practice) and Continuing Professional Development (Advanced Practice) curriculum.
The AFMC Response to the Opioid Crisis Advanced Practice Professional Development Curriculum is comprised of eight topics about the Canadian opioid crisis, substance use disorder and pain management geared towards practicing physicians. Each topic begins with a Pre-Test for you to self-assess your knowledge and understanding of the upcoming topic related to opioids. After completing the Pre-Test, you will gain access to the learning module for that same topic. The learning module is an interactive learning experience that will guide you through content provided by Canadian medical experts in the field. After completing the learning module, the Post-Test will be released. The Post-Test asks you to self-assess for a second time with the insight and knowledge you gained from the online learning module.
