CREB Training - Practices in Research Ethics Review

In this module, you will explore various practices in research ethics reviews. You will learn how to characterize risk in research and what factors are considered when determining the risk level of a research proposal. The concept of proportionate review will be covered, highlighting how different levels of ethics review are associated with different levels of risk. You will also explore the mechanisms for ongoing ethical oversight of research and the types of materials that can be expected with an ethics application.

The module will also discuss common ethical considerations to be aware of when conducting a review of a submission, as well as conflicts of interest (COIs) that can occur during research. You will learn how to handle complaints made to the Research Ethics Board (REB) and the steps to take when things go wrong during research. You will review deviations from ethically approved research and learn when it is necessary to remove ethics approval. Finally, you will explore the REB's authority to remove ethics approval and some of the ethical considerations of this.
